Reporter's Notebook
For my reporter’s notebook reflection, I have decided to write about my experience reporting on my enterprise story. I wrote about pickleball in the Salt Lake Valley, specifically women in the sport. I wrote about a women-owned cider and pickleball bar in Millcreek and how the two come together to create an inclusive and fun environment within the sport. I also interviewed pro pickleball player Alix Truong, who is 20 years old and lives in Utah when she’s not traveling to compete in tournaments. I didn’t run into many negative assumptions about women in sports during my reporting, which showed me pickleball is a great sport to learn and meet new people in an accepting environment.
I think something people will learn through my reporting is how long pickleball has been around. Many people think of pickleball as a sport for older people, but it has really popped up in the younger scene recently. Truong, for example, uses social media a lot to promote her sponsors and tournaments, along with her day-to-day routine. It’s fun for people to follow her pickleball journey but also get to know her personality through her videos and posts. Though this sport isn’t much of a team sport, I also talked to Truong about her doubles partners and how much they mean to her. She says that she loves traveling with the same people and even getting to play with them sometimes. It brings out that friendly competition in all of them.
Beyond the professional aspect, one moment that was memorable was going to Fairmont Park and talking with people who play for fun. It showed me that people have a lot of heart and connection to this game. It really brings new and old friends together in the best way.
